Hi again,

Another IBF question. I am wondering what others do when they want to test mods before going live. I know some boards just shut down, but I have set up an area that is for testing. So far, I am still unclear if the admin cp in each area can be considered separate. I am using the same database, so any hacks I might do to the database will be live.

So how do you guys set up your test beds for skins and other mods before going live? Suggestions and ideas are welcome.

We have a totally seperate system for the test rig we use, We have the main forum now on a host, but we use 4 other test forums, depending on needs, they all have seperate databases thou, But all on our own server, not on the forum host.

you could also try downloading PHPDEV, its an all in one package that will allow you to check any php files without uploading to a server. With the latest version available for download it even comes with an invision board already installed, admittedly it is only v1.01 but you can upgrade that to v1.1 beta 4 and test all mods before adding them to your live board, keeping your main board free from any problems and running smoothly.

you can actually download it from Here (http://www.firepages.com.au/)

details of whats in the package:
apache 1.3.27
php4.2.3
MySQL4a
Cerebus FTP server

phpmyadmin 2.3.2
InvisionBoard forum
PhpWebsite
mod_perl 1.27 (as an optional download)

runs on windows 98/ME/NT/XP
:)

tis what I use on me lappy and runs perfect.
it has to be worth a try

This is brilliant. Exactly the kind of information I was looking for, thanks! I am really new to PHP so these tools are really useful.

I use PHPtriad. It comes with the latest versions of Apache, PHP & mySQL. I find it runs Invision really well and is great for building skins on. The official description is:
An installer of Apache, MySQL and PHP for Windows.
You can download it from:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/phptria...-1.exe?download (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/phptriad/phptriad2-2-1.exe?download)
And read more about it at:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/phptriad

Yep I have that on my Main system TopGunn use it and think its a great programme, but I find for ease of installation and use for first time PHP'ers phpdev is a great little proggy.

Any of the above are great.

If you stuff anything up, you just delete it and start again with no downtime.

Reccommended & being used by the staff of IBFskinned, cant be that bad eh.

Do you guys use source control, or just simple backups for the 'stuffed' :D(I like that phrase) code?

I just simply backup anything. I find it the easiest way.
