A CTR is your normal every day run of the mill screen.
A flat screen is like a CTR but the screen has not got that curve in it and therefore it is better if there is a window behind you or something as they do now reflect as much as a normal CTR.
A LCD Panel.. ahhh.. now they are the best in my view. No glare, no nasty refresh lines to mess up your eyes. A CTR screen wipes from the top to the bottom constantly to update the screen and this is what gives you sore eyes and causes eye strain on long use. The LCD Panels do not have this problem as they have no refresh lines.
One thing you have to remember about panels is they have a resolution limit depending on the screen size. My HP Pavilion vf51 is a 15" panel and it's top res is 1024x768x32. This did not worry me when I got it because that is what I use anyway. So if you want a res higher than that you are going to have to go for a 17" or above.
I suggest that you have a look in some shops and you will see the clarity differance between a CTR and LCD. The LCD kicks the butt of a CRT all over the place and back again for clarity.

I can see the difference in clarity between my desktop monitor and my laptop screen and the laptop screen is so sharp, it's sweet :) :D
