Hitachi Teases With 400GB HDD
Posted by Chris Emmerson-Pace @ 7:41 am PST
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies has announced the upcoming release of an ATA hard disk drive (HDD) with a 400GB storage capacity.
The Deskstar 7K400 will ship with Parallel ATA and Serial ATA (SATA) interfaces.
According to Hitachi, the new drive has been designed for audio video (AV) and ATA nearline environments, where large capacities and a lower per-gigabyte cost are key requirements.
Hitachi has designed the drive for use in high-end digital video recorders (DVRs), being the first drive to include a new industry-standard AV feature, known as Streaming Command Set, to enhance streaming functionality in digital video applications.
According to the company, the Deskstar 7K400 can hold 400 hours of standard TV programming, 45 hours of HDTV, and more than 6,500 hours of digital music.
Currently, competitor Seagate Technology offers its largest HDD at 200GB, and Maxtor offers its largest at 320GB.
Even though the company is pushing the product toward DVRs, its compatibility with ATA-33/66/100 and Serial ATA-150 buses and huge storage capacity will make it attractive to the home PC user.
Hitachi is currently shipping Deskstar 7K400 drives in limited quantities.
