This one's going to hit him like a ton of bricks.

"Yes, we're pushing our paid services harder, but we're still offering a free product that is fully functional. This has always been our vision and it's not going to change. "They" said 1.1 wouldn't be free, it was. "They" said 1.2 wouldn't be free, it was. "They" said 1.3 wouldn't be free, it was. "They" say 2.0 won't be free - and it will be." Actually, 2.0.0 isnt technically free. Although, I have my major thoughts on the situation, there is a free trial, and they say they are going to enforce time constraints on how long "permanent" use is, but i dont think they will or want to try, doing soemthing like this can potentially hurt a company like them , and is starting to show...

Hi everyone

I saw this on the phpbb forum and thought it was quite amusing. Some reasonable advice at the end of the page I thought.

mmm, I don't know if they will go downhill. I know we certainly here a heck of alot of their customers complaints about them. Pay for support? well you don't actually get any from what i've heard. As for their change in plans, that's up to them of course. But they could atleast have the decency to say they changed their minds, not try to bend truth about it.
They've now got a name for their board, it is nice. And as long as you don't need support from themselves, you're fine. I imagine their new offices etc need funding so they've realised they need to enforce the buying of their product. They've basically put their board at the level of vb now. And I believe vb is a very good contender! so, will they win this one or vb? time will tell :)

Now, while it is annoying and devious of them is to have been perfusely saying (till they are red in the face) that it will remain free. And then change their minds and be arrogent about it when people have questioned it. I'm sure they have a fair amount of people to deal with, causing them to be stressed but that attitude isn't winning them any awards!

It's their product, they can do what they like at the end of the day. I imagine alot of work has gone into it so they do deserve some payment for it. A lower price would be good. Not only would it allow more people to buy it, but they would make more money because of it.

And their new forum layout. It appears they are gradually weeding out the community. a community which it rode on the back of for the first years of their boards life. They are forgetting that one! and to forget what made it popular in the first place can't be good.

Still! hope they make it. If they don't, well probably over 3/4 of their members will be furnishing the other free boards :) so that's nice! they are doing other free boards a favour :)

and i've rambled on so i'll shut up now.

long and short of it is, i dont really care what they are doing. Hope it works out for them, but at the end of the day, there's other forum software to use instead.

Perhaps someone should present that to IPB or even Matt himself. Would like to see the look on their faces while they tried to stammer out their reasoning.

I just posted it at IPS. I'll be banned within seconds.

But hey, if we all did it, what could they do?

Lexx

Ban us all?

I'm sure they'll have plenty as it is. As Aristia said, it's up to them what they charge for what they produce, but not after making statements such as the above.

Well, it would, except that I sent that to him (along with a *nice* email), and he didn't respond to me.

So I posted this link in his blog, and he deleted it.

Fuckers. IPB has handled this in a thoroughly assholish way.

Perhaps they know they are going downhill and want to get as much money as they can before they become a ghost town ;)

It's a shame indeed after beeing a member there from the very first beginning, before they released the first beta.

They have totally made a fool of themselves... and it's unacceptable imo. <_<

ah well life goes on.. not that i want to pee agaist the wind on this one. By why is it so bad that a company wants to make money from its own software?

My personal view..

Aristia

It's not stu, the bad part of this is that this company promised this version will be free. We can't hold much faith in a company that cannot keep it's promises.

To combat this outrage i am putting together my own forum scripts. At first it won't be as good as IPB, but i think i'll get there! :LMAO:

I just want them to offer the trial versions for free like i'll do, and for the full version it won't even be as much as Invision are charging! How have they gotten away with it for this long?

And yes Invision Power Services was sold. ;))

Damn right, we can't trust them!

I don't recommend the board anymore....

The boards themselves are really good, but yeah, they really did go back on what they said about there always being a free version, and for that i believe they have lost alot of potential customers, and perhaps the trust of some of their current customers. And they are handling the situation in a very foolish way, because if potential customers find out what they are doing, i think they might just reconsider.
