View Full Version : PS2 Online MikeC 07-Dec-2004, 12:05 AM as some may have seen about the xbox live you need to pay a subscription fee for the Xbox - is there also a similar fee for the PS? Ed 07-Dec-2004, 05:32 AM No PS2 Online is completly FREE!!!! Thats a Major plus for PS2. If you get the new Slim PS2 (MSRP: $149.99) you get a built in Network Adapter. (REG: $49.99).... so you save money on the slim PS2. But they will probably lower the price on the regular PS2 with Network Adapter. GoldFinger 07-Dec-2004, 12:44 PM Only down side is PS2 online sucks big time ! And thats coming from a Ps2 Online Beta tester not a xbox fan boy... Ps2 online sucks, period ! If u want online gaming id suggest Xbox... MikeC 08-Dec-2004, 10:57 PM thats defaintely good to hear that the PS is free online as i would have been fighting over which console to connect online - but im sure i could pick up a cheap network adapter from somewhere Thinking about it - it might be different for us over here.... Lexx 09-Dec-2004, 07:47 PM Nope, it's free, and we can get a Network adapter for as little as £17.99 As for PS2 being bad online, I've heard that the X-Box isn't much better, if at all, and that comes with a fee. I've already got a PS2 adapter, although I've yet to get online due to network problems, the price is good, but I can't really comment on the gameplay.... Ed 10-Dec-2004, 08:55 PM Ok. If X-Box isnt much better. Then how do we know whats good and what isnt. I mean if there both the same and virtually no difference except different game titles, or system, then how can we decifer whats good or not. Those two consoles are the Two Main systems for online gameplay anymore. but uhh what are we comparing 'Good' to? Jack-UK 10-Dec-2004, 10:58 PM XboX live is a lot better period. Lexx 12-Dec-2004, 04:53 PM I can't speak for others, but I am comparing the online gameplay to 'good' in two ways. Firstly, how online gameplay compares to the standard gameplay of the game, and if two is applicable, how it compares to the online PC version in gameplay alone, not performance as the two mediums are too different, and basically irrelevant. Even a game which is better on the console than a PC, such as Halo, the online gameplay still lags behind that of the PC version. Ed 14-Dec-2004, 11:24 PM uh huh, I see. But what if the game is only for one console. how are you going to compare then? There a quite a few titles for xbox or ps2 alone and no other systems have that title. MikeC 16-Dec-2004, 09:29 AM I think i may say for probably the first time i may actually agree with you Ed ;) I cant really compare the PS and XBox as they are both different - they both have their independant styles of games and gameplay and even limitations. Eventually i should have both online to see how they compare online. Ed 22-Dec-2004, 02:01 PM :) I think i might be getting a PS2 for christmas. Im most definatly going to play it online. So We should have like a Socom II or Madden online tournament or something... I dunno, we shall see. GoldFinger 01-Jan-2005, 05:48 PM uh huh, I see. But what if the game is only for one console. how are you going to compare then? There a quite a few titles for xbox or ps2 alone and no other systems have that title. You compare it to how ud expect a game to play smoothly online. ie do u get problems with the runing of the game. You dont have to compare it to anyother game. To compare the two consoles to see which is best for online gaming u then say well which produces the games with the less problems... Online Pc gaming has been around for years and years. Now programers designing PS2 games arnt the same guys that have been doing PC games online for years and years as the code and setup is totally differnt, which is part of the reason the Ps2 can b pushed so far with limited hardware its 5 years old and still comes close to matching todays latest PC games because the devs have worked so closely with what they've got. However, in comes Xbox and devs that have had years of experience designing and runing online games on the PC, the coding and setup of Xbox games and Online play is very like that of the PC gaming world. So they've been able to look to see whats been done and take leaps and bounds past where the Ps2 is as far as online game play goes... Yes there are still problems with some of the servers due to trafic but i guess ur always gonna get that a peak times on the best games... How ever imo Xbox live is far better service than PS2 online just due to the fact that its very very new to all the Ps2 devs. Where as the Xbox devs have been doing it on the PC for years... Ps2 online is a testing gorund for the Ps3, its part of the reason its free Sony arnt making any promises cos they know there learning the ropes as they go. Xbox however have a good idea what they can deliver.. I still try to play a bit of both. And imo the top Ps2 games still have more game play factor than that of Xbox games. However for online stabilty id have to go with Xbox so it depends what ur after at the end of the day. If its just online gaming then u could always go with PC gaming which is better than either... lol AjRap2 01-Jan-2005, 11:16 PM I must say, if you wanna go along with XBO but don't like the price tag on Live, check out xbconnect.com I don't use it but It sounds interesting Ed 24-Jan-2005, 03:11 AM You compare it to how ud expect a game to play smoothly online. ie do u get problems with the runing of the game. You dont have to compare it to anyother game. To compare the two consoles to see which is best for online gaming u then say well which produces the games with the less problems... Even then while your comparing the game play to your standards, Your standards still cannot be right because everyone has different internet connections. Dial out right sucks ass. So if you have dial up, How can you begin to compare with someone who lets say has Cable or DSL? Lexx 24-Jan-2005, 03:36 PM Simple, you can't. As far as I'm aware, you can't get onto the network with a Dial-up Modem, it's just not fast enough. But yes, different speeds do vary the gameplay quality, and this had been the case with all net-games as long as they've existed. You've either got to hope that the people you play with have a decent connection, or grin and bear it when they don't. AjRap2 24-Jan-2005, 06:24 PM I have dialu-p with my PStwo, and its fine, its the other dial-up users i have trouble playin with, lag like a mother............. bhavin 18-Jun-2005, 12:09 AM No thats why the PS2 is so much better. :hip: |
