System Requirements for IPB 2.1.x
To install Invision Power Board, your web server must meet the following specification:
PHP 4.3 (or better)
MySQL 4.0 (or better)
If you are unsure whether your server meets these requirements, please check with your host before proceeding with the installation. Advanced users may wish to download PHP & download MySQL and install both themselves.
Invision Power Board works best on an Apache server, and is Apache v1 and v2 compatible.
General Requirements
You will need to have an FTP client installed on your computer to be able to transfer the Invision Power Board source files to your web server. Clients you may like to try are:
* SmartFTP (Windows): http://www.smartftp.net
* Transmit (Macintosh): http://www.panic.com/transmit/
You will need to have access to at least one MySQL database. This does not need to be an empty database since IPB can add a prefix to its tables to prevent conflict with other scripts. Additionally, you will need to have the username, password and hostname details for this database handy during the installation. The database username you use must have permission to CREATE, DROP and ALTER tables. If you are unsure whether you have these details or if your username has sufficient permissions, please consult your host before continuing. Finally, you will need around 2MB of disk space and 3MB of database storage to complete the installation and allow for a moderately sized community.
Almost Ready...
You do not need to know PHP or MySQL to be able to install (and use) Invision Power Board. However, a basic knowledge of using FTP is a plus. If you don't know how to use FTP, we would recommend you read the documentation supplied with your FTP client and learn the basics of uploading files and setting permissions on them (CHMOD).
We are assuming you have already downloaded the IPB zip file, and have unzipped it on your computer. This installation guide will use the term 'ZIP archive' in reference to the zip file you have downloaded, 'local folders' in reference to the unzipped IPB files you now have on your computer and 'remote folders' in reference to the folders and files you will be putting on your web server.
