Anyone try skinning a board with a server that is on some kind of

crack ? Well believe me ... if you havent, i dont suggest trying

it and try preventing it from happening.

I have been fighting with my damn host and the server all damn day

... databases keep getting dropped for no apparent reason ... and

im talking whole forums...

Not to mention there are times that i cant even log onto FTP or my

panel to access the site .... its gone down 4 times today for a

total of 6 hours .... bulls&it is all i gotta say.

The board i was skinning ... was one of the databases that just up

and vanished ... along with it all files that even were remotely

close to being used with the database .... can someone tell me how

in the hell this happens ??

I have heard of some weird crap before, but this is taking the

gold for now. Thank god i back up all template files and such to

my P.C. after i get done editing pieces and parts ... or id be

really ------ off.

Good side to this is... my hosting company has been quick to

respond each time... or is that a good thing ?? Hell i dont know,

all i know is im trying to finsih a damn skin up that i have been

working on for entirely to long... all because i cant keep

databases and cant connect at times to my server.

The responce i got back from these people after the third time of

this happening was an im sorry letter and a years free hosting.

Now... im not one to *****. But what the hell is up with the years

free hosting ? (The plan im on is yearly payment ...)

Something musta been very wrong and is still wrong with thier

server('s) to give me something of this caliber... cause i know it

wasnt because they were scared i was going to go and kick someone

in the --- for all thats happening (to put it nicely).

All i know is the reason i switched hosting here ...

(2000 megs of space ,Free domain name with no renewal fees,

200,000 MB's of data transfer every month.

99.9% uptime guarantee. <----- MY ---

24/7 technical / design support.

Web based control panel. MicrosoftÙ FrontPageÙ extensions.

Detailed traffic statistics. 24/7 FTP access.

PHP4 & Unlimited MySQL database's.

Unlimited pop3 email accounts.

Unlimited FTP aliases.

Unlimited E-Mail aliases.

Free secure server.

Unlimited autoresponders.

Free scripts (Counter, FormMail, Guestbook ...etc.)

Customised error pages. Password protected directories.

WAP server. SPAM filtering.

Online help manual. Email virus protection.

Your own CGI-BIN.

No hidden charges guarantee...

Now i signed up for this because 1.) It's $99 a year and 2.) ..

check that deal out .. you wont find much like that out there.

I guess im wondering if its actually worth the damn headache that

im going thru now. Instead of giving me a free year ... they could

have simply put me on another server and all would have been fine

and dandy.

Anyway ...please dont mind me. Im just ranting on ------ about

something no one can do anything about. I cant access crap rigth

now.. so im checking things out around here and babbling on.

I guess i could try working with the templates in Dreamweaver

...but it isnt like the online admin panel. Atleast i can see what

the hell im doing... but right now.. i have no online panel... no

board... hell my server isnt available. And this ... is the story

of my day so far.

Thanks for listening.. now i must go and kill a server

the way i look at it is that you get what you pay for...

now i can't see how for $99 a year u can get 200gb bandwidth per month (or did i read that wrong) and the way they can afford to offer such a service to you is to prevent you using their servers / bandwidth / databases in the first place !

Eh ... sometimes they feel like nuts ... sometimes they dont.?.?.

Things have been running fine today .. i mean everything is moving at top speed and nothing is going down. Today ... must be one of those good days i heard something about.

But about the above link ... very good idea ... i like. Didnt know something like it even was around. Maybe i outta do research next time ... :hmm:

But i shall download and install on my PC ... should prove to be a very handy thing indeed ... like in instances of a server breaking ... or even smoking crack.

Thanks for everything guys. :D

one of the good things about phptriad is, if you have any problems with your net server and you have broadband at home then it makes it very easy to run your site from home without having to install the full versions of php, apache and mysql, which can be quiet daunting to peaple such as me, but phptriad???...........just one click away and all is done, i love it
 phptriad

have you tried installing phptriad
That's what I use. I have my test forums on a machine that sits behind me and I work on it from my main machine in front of me. I can just ftp over to the other machine or turn my chair around and do anything manually. It works out pretty well that way.

PHP-Triad is basically a package containing PHP 4.1.1 and Apache HTTPd 1.3.23 (may be newer version now) pre-configured to work together on any Windows system.
Once thats downloaded simply double click the installer and follow it through until everything is installed.

You should now have a "PHPTriad" sub-folder in your start menu, open this up and click the shortcut for "PHPTriad Control Panel" a DOS Window should pop-up briefly, you may ignore this. Once that window has performed its task and closed itself open http://localhost:1005

You will be presented with the PHPTriad Control Panel...
Click the "Install Apache as Service" link, this will allow apache to run at system start-up
(IMPORTANT NOTE: This will run a web-server on your computer, I'd recommend if you have a firewall that you set it to dis-allow incoming tcp/udp data on port 80 so that no-one other than yourself/localhost will be able to access the server)
You will receive a confirmation message, after this you may close the browser window.
Next Start > Run > services.msc
Set the Apache service to "Automatic" and start it if it isn't already.
You are now serving web documents from C:\apache\htdocs (this is where you would have your Invision fourms folder) the address you use to reach the files via your browser is http://localhost

If you are still having problems, you can also start everything manually. I should have stated that earlier. You don't have to have it start automatically.

Start Button --> All Programs --> PHP Triad --> Apache Console --> start Apache

Do the same for mySQL (start mySQL-D-NT for NT based OSes, i.e. XP)

The Apache window will stay open, just minimize it. The mySQL window will pop up the down and you won't see it.
