dont get me
wrong , plz :) I just
want to talk and hear what you think about it :)

all skins what we do is nothing
more then just changing ibf main skin: colors, icons and etc
Whould you
call it a real skinning ?

In my opinion, the real skin is what
Rikki did with ibskins - but that is very hard work, but... that is what I
would call a real skin.

Can we try to create something that would
be just another copy of ibf skin ?

( remember, dot bite me, just
whant to hear your thoughts )

Yes
i agree the skins that 99% of people release are just chageing colours and
images. And the word real skinner is a little to harse, rikki sin is very
good and it looks nice, but there is alot more work to do that. Yes it can
be done, by changing the templates and adding alot more code to allow
images on areas. But the trouble you get from doing that, is one you then
can't export the skin like we would, you would need to also copy alot
of .php file that have been alter to change setting, and then a very good
chance they would not work on your own forum dur to personal links and so
on.

Also with the present version of 1.1 there are still alot of
error that come on when editing templates, hence no one making alot of
skins until the final. Yes it is something i plan on doing later on.
As
thou for releasing them for public download. I would also agree with rikki
if you can export it, then maybe we may.

Time will tell, but until
the final. no chance from us :)

Odin its
an interesting idea. I see guess you would call our skinning: "A Paint
Job" :P
Whatever it is called people still want them B)

I have
not yet tried. But I think the reason Rikki never releases his skin is
because he can't.

What he does is directly on his forum itself,
in the php files.

Files, that will not export as a skin
set.

I agree with you in a way, all we are doing is changing some
colours here and there, and making some nice graphics. But This is real
skinning, we go as far as we can with the knowledge and talent we have,
and what the board lets us do.

Definition of skinning is: to change
the look of something (or to strip skin from a creature)
And that is
what we are doing (the first bit) :P

Skinning is making any change to the appearance of something. This can be
done with simple color scheme changes, graphics replacement and layout
changes. I think most *skinners* release skins to help newbies who know
nothing of css or html and would like to use a product like Invisionboard
but need it to integrate into their website, i.e. *match* their colors.
At least that's why I do it. :P And
from personal requests, I believe most novice users want to download a
skin that fits their *basic* needs and then they continue to modify it
with custom graphics and hacks. I usually get asked for a basic black, or
basic navy etc. and they take it from there. I think it can only promote
and encourage the use of Invisionboard to have as many color themes
available for download as possible. Imagine going to Baskin Robbins and
only being able to get two flavors of ice cream, vanilla and chocolate?
:(

Personally I
make significant changes in the layout to *my* forums, did it with
Ikonboard and will do it again with IBF, but the effort I spend on my
forums is to make them *unique*, so why would I spend that time to
differentiate my forums from the rest and them make that skin available
for download? I wouldn't. B)

Layout changes
in the html/php templates are exported as part of the skin process,
it's pretty straightforward and with the changes to the skinning
engine this release being able to use IMG_DIR in the wrapper means no
tweaks after import anymore.

I think we (The
Skinners Of This Site) should get together and create a very complex,
orignal skin. We could rock the world of all forums with our ideas...What
do you think?

Anyone interested?

We have
decided to release where we are hiding this work in progress:
New Skin ('http://www.internetzone.biz/~topgunn9/ibfskinned_new/')
It is passworded and encrypted. That is
the only place to see it.
Good luck.
If you break it keep what you
see to yourself.

Sounds
like a fantastic Idea for all of us to get together and do something!
It will need co-ordination though. I can set up a board to work on, then
perhaps it would be a good idea to assign each person to an area.
We'll need to have an irc channel i think. Will email you with
details, once everyone has said they want to take part. I think a poll
needs creating for this one to see who's interested.

I could
provide a board and hide it behind a passworded area (Like the current
one). I could also help with images, CSS or just plain beta
testing.

i would
suggest www.accessirc.net

we have a few chat room over there, no
lag, fast connections...

We are
going to need to find a way to get a team of elite skinners. Obviously we
cannot use 20 people as there are not enough jobs. We have no idea how to
'select' people but if we do regular skins as a large team maybe
we could alternate? Chat room sounds like a good idea but IM (Instant
Messenger) programs are just as good. For example MSN allows you to have 4
or 5 people chatting together and so does AIM. That would be alot easier
than trying to get us all on one mIRC server. We (M3NF & AristiA & me)
will discuss this more and post the results of our discussion here for you
:D
I
have set-up a passworded board with FTP access so it can be worked on
easily without non-skinners seeing it. When we have decided how many
people are doing the skin, what the skin will be and other details we will
distribute these details to the people who need them.
Just an idea but
maybe you could make one to rival Rikki's at ibskins.com which edits
templates and stuff.

P.S. I
wouldn't mind sitting the first skin one out until I am a bit more
familiar with skinning

My skin is a skin, not PHP file edits -_- It is perfectly possible to create a skin like IBS's using the IBF skinning system. I don't release it because I wish to keep it unique. However, that might change... soon ;)

YEY! he he, yeah making a skin like that is possible, yeah it takes ALOT of work, but you can do it!

M3NF
05-Dec-2002, 06:14 PM
I still personally thinks it way to slow to load up thou, maybe a less intensive version would go down better, alot of people do still use 56k modems and we still need to think of them.

Markleshark
05-Dec-2002, 06:33 PM
yeah, ur Neon Blue was a gr8 example, it loads faster than the standards invision skin but it looks a H**L of alot better, very nice it is!

tho that didnt have noffin to do wid the topic, i think u get the point! :ermm:

Aristia
05-Dec-2002, 06:51 PM
mmm, nice. that is a good skin :)

Is there any way though, that you can edit the graphics so they are smaller files? "save for web"? or are they already as small as you can get them?

Its good, but like the others say, it is a bit slow to load.

I've been getting into the templates more myself, and can see that it will be possible. so cool.

I'm gonna try make a really big modification for IBFS. but itll prolly take me a while and by then a new version with a different skinning engine will be out lmao.

Well, atleast gaining knowledge as we go :D
